ABOUT

My name is Joana and I am a Yoga teacher from Brazil. Yoga came into my life unexpectedly in 2001 in Rio de Janeiro, my birthplace. I was at a gym and stumbled across a yoga class. It was love at first sight.

In 2003, I started my first Teacher Training with Marco Schultz to deepen my practice. That is when I started substituting my regular teacher whenever she was out of town. In 2004, I attended my second Teacher Training with Pedro Kupfer, a month-long intensive in Florianópolis. When I went back to Rio, I started teaching at Shiva Shankara Yoga Studio and several gyms.

Feeling the need to keep learning more, in 2005 I went to New York for my third Training at Yoga Works. In the Big Apple I was also fortunate to practice in different yoga studios and learn from internationally renowned teachers like Dharma Mittra and Alan Finger.

Back in Brazil, classes were my priority and that was when I started to focus on one-on-one and small groups, while still keeping my studio and gym classes going.

In 2008, it was time to take my studies to India. I went to sacred places, met gurus and studied at Sachcha Dham Ashram and Dayananda Ashram, both located in RishikeshPrasanthi Nilayam in Puttaparthi and Mata Amritanandamayi Devi in Amritapuri, among other Ashrams. Since then, I have been doing several workshops with great teachers like David Lurey, Clayton Horton, Scott Blossom, Laurent-Pierre Dauzou, among others as well as continued my studies with Pedro Kupfer.

My daughter was born in the beginning of 2013. I kept teaching private classes throughout my pregnancy and got back to it just a few months after she was born. Having a child truly is a spiritual experience, and she has been my little guru since day one. In 2015, my family and I moved to Trinidad and Tobago where I continued to teach yoga and to share my experiences through a local morning TV show.

We moved to Houston in February 2017. I have continued my yoga studies and teachings in the area. A lot has happened over the last few years in my life and I am sure Yoga has been the one essential thing to keep me grounded.

Joana Home Yoga is my way of sharing everything that I have learned with those who want to lead a healthier, calmer and improved life.

Namaste,

Joana

  • I had the amazing opportunity to have yoga classes with Joana while pregnant. The classes were developed with a lot of care and love, I could feel it in every pose we have done! In my opinion, having yoga classes with Joana was a powerful tool to prepare myself for my daughter’s natural birth, which was just perfect! Even during the pregnancy, I did not experience back pain and I am sure that it was because of our yoga practice. I was so amazed by the classes that my husband started to do classes and practice yoga for better running performance. He’s a triathlete and the classes really helped him in improving his balance, posture, and performance too. After some months I had a few classes in the park, with Joana, and at this time was to improve my physical condition to running too. She is always a wonderful and ethical professional, very sweet, and thoughtful with her students and classes! Thanks, Joana for your love for teaching this philosophy of life and to helping me to become a balanced person in life.

  • I've done yoga in a few local studios but none paid as much attention as she. Joana showed me the proper way and walked me through every single pose to make sure I felt the stretch AND stayed without injury.

  • Yoga is being a big change in my habits and my life. It is not just a workout, it is a philosophy of life. Joanna has to be a big part of this journey. She is super dedicated and has shown me that with the correct guidance we can reach and do things we never thought possible.

  • I met Joana through a close friend and as a result, was curious to try some of her Yoga classes. My contact with Yoga up until then had been very little and I had never really kept at it with any of my previous experiences. However after a few classes with Joana, I was hooked and we had regular classes twice a week for several years until unfortunately, Joana moved away. I still miss her classes terribly and have never found anyone that kept me interested and stimulated as much as Joana did. Her classes are varied and she includes a little of all the different aspects of Yoga. The exercises, meditation, breathing, etc. I don't think she follows a particular method as such but tends to adapt to her pupils' needs and preferences. I always feel wonderful afterward! I'm sure anyone o practices Yoga with Joana will feel the same as I do about her. I wish her much success.

  • For years, I felt Yoga would be a good thing to do. Being a very tall, somewhat stiff German, I was however hesitant that I look like a fool in class, never really making any progress. I nevertheless tried out a few classes but did not go back because they were not physically exhausting enough, while I also like to build some muscles and generally tone my body through Yoga, not just increase my flexibility and sense of harmony. When I was on vacation in Rio de Janeiro some years ago, I stumbled across a class taught by Joana while she was still living there. A teacher‘s spirit makes for the entire atmosphere of a class. Joana‘s spirit is UPLIFTING, PURE, POSITIVE while GROUNDED and CHALLENGING. The progress of her students is a real concern to her, and she likes to push us further then we thought possible. It was exactly what I was looking for. I then afforded myself the privilege of some private classes with her for extra attention. Her sense of DEDICATION and EXACTNESS made me go that extra mile. It is thanks to her that I never strayed too far away for too long from the disciplined path of Yoga as her watchful inner eye accompanies me. I feel lucky to have found her as a teacher and can only recommend without any hesitation but with full ENTHUSIASM.

  • For me Joana is not just a yoga teacher, she is THE TEACHER.  When I first started my practice with Joana I didn't know at what point Yoga was going to change my life. Having my own preconceptions about the practice I was only looking for a good workout. While attending a lot of different types of yoga classes in Europe and the US I never really felt that I can grasp the essence of Yoga and I often thought of it as just a good stretch. Joana has guided me through the depths of the practice starting with the importance of breathing, staying present, correct posture, and building up strength. Joana is a truly great teacher, she is an uplifting person and when you practice with her you can feel that she is fully dedicated to helping you improve all aspects of the practice, body, and mind.  Practicing Yoga with Joana has helped me to have better sleep, less anxiety, improve my posture and body tonus, and also to have a better life attitude. I fully recommend taking the private classes where you can have the undivided attention and care. I am very thankful for having the opportunity to be her student and to learn from her the true nature of Yoga.
